Writing is hard; getting your work published and read is vital.

I help LGBTQ+ and disabled/crip academics and storytellers develop their projects and revise their writing so they can share their much-needed voices and experiences.

Editing and coaching can help if:

  • You find yourself lacking the support you need to succeed, either due to institutional shortcomings or a lack of proper training in your fellow authors and creative peers.

  • You’re looking for help with accountability, structure, and time management.

  • You struggle with the historical, social, political, or theoretical details in your LGBTQ+ and disability fiction.

  • You find yourself over- or under-editing your drafts and manuscripts, overwhelmed by managing a growing project, at a creative crossroad, or experiencing writer’s block.

Is life less manageable than before?

I get it. My time in academe saw me: lose touch with the hobbies I love, struggle to maintain relationships with friends and family, and suffer setbacks to my physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

Has your support network fallen short?

I know that academic advisors and mentors are often slow to respond, check out when you need them most, or can’t seem to meet our needs. This fuels feelings of imposter syndrome, fears of failure, and the endless pressure to prove our worth and belonging.

Does sharing your work with others feel risky?

Handing your scholarly or creative work over to someone else can be scary. But I’m a trustworthy, reliable, trained, and non-competing interlocutor who can be your teammate in preparing your manuscript for editorial consideration. Let me be a source of human empathy and substantive feedback that you, as a quality scholar or author, deserve.

Could you use some help with depth and robustness?

As scholars and authors from marginalized communities, we have important stories to tell – personal experiences or academic investments that require our voices to make social progress. But sometimes it can be difficult to articulate these perspectives, especially if we are too close to the subject. My formal training and personal experiences give me the academic and creative tools to be a fresh set of eyes on your project as you navigate politically and socially difficult themes and challenges like using culturally and historically appropriate language and ideas.

Ian Funk, PhD

Hi, I’m Ian, a PhD in English with a focus in crip/queer theory and American Literature and Culture. I also hold degrees in History and American Studies. My work and expertise inhabit the intersections of sexuality, disability, masculinity, popular culture, and institutional discourses.

Before my time in academe, I ran a small electronic music record label and toured as a DJ and producer. I bring the skills acquired in that life — project development, creative direction, tending to the technical backend, and more — to the editing and coaching services I offer academics and writers today.

I live in sunny Southern Spain with my two old dogs, a cat, and my partners. When I’m not working with clients, I like to collect vinyl records, work in our garden, binge watch serial television, and cook all kinds of different food. ¡Yo hablo Español!
